    Emissions compliance for generator operators

    MCPD and SCR Compliance

The Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) sets limits on the nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and dust emissions from combustion plant between 1 MW and 50 MW thermal input, which includes most larger diesel generators. In Ireland it is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Eirgenco supplies, installs, retrofits and services Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems that bring generators into compliance.

    Regulatory context

What the MCPD means for generator operators

If you operate a generator in the 1 MW to 50 MW range, the plant must be registered with the EPA and, depending on how it is used, must meet emission limit values. Emergency standby generators that run for limited hours per year are treated differently to generators that run regularly, but registration still applies. The deadlines depend on when the plant was commissioned and its size. If you are unsure where your site stands, contact us and we will help you work it out.

    Selective Catalytic Reduction

SCR is an exhaust after-treatment system. A reductant is injected into the exhaust stream and a catalyst converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water, cutting NOx emissions substantially. SCR can be specified on a new generator or retrofitted to an existing one.

    Eirgenco capability

    What Eirgenco provides

    • SCR systems supplied with new TEKSAN generators
    • SCR retrofit to existing generators of any brand
    • Servicing and reductant supply for installed SCR systems
    • Emissions assessment to establish whether your site needs SCR

    Who this is for

Data centres, hospitals, pharmaceutical and food processing plants, and any site with generators that run beyond emergency hours or that fall under an EPA licence. Also consultants specifying emissions equipment for new installations.

    Frequently asked questions

01Does the MCPD apply to my standby generator?

If it is between 1 MW and 50 MW thermal input it must be registered. Whether emission limits apply depends on run hours. Contact us and we will check.

02Can SCR be fitted to an old generator?

In most cases yes. We assess the engine, exhaust and available space first.

    03Who regulates this in Ireland?

    The Environmental Protection Agency.
